The Science Of Smell: The Power Of Scent Marketing

It has been a couple of weeks now since I purposely ‘tour’ this one food court located on the ground floor of AEON Mall in Shah Alam, Malaysia. The reason for the tour is because of me writing this article actually. Last month when I was accompanying my wife there to buy stuff, I told her that I’d prefer to hang out at the food court having a cup of coffee and ask her to find me there once she’s done with the shopping. That day, I didn’t feel like walking up as I was a little bit tired after numerous meetings before that.
While she was settling her stuff on the mall’s 3rd floor, I spent a couple of hours at the food court observing people while enjoying a local coffee I bought at one of the stalls. While sipping my white coffee bit by bit and enjoying its aroma, there was this one strong smell that suddenly swarmed the entire area, overriding the fresh-brewed white coffee smell.
It was the smell of assam laksa.
